Talking. In the eighties, each of us married, we kept on by phone, long distance. Sandy, impatient with my need to rehearse a problem endlessly, would throw up his impatient husband hands after only the second rehash, and say, “Go call Naomi.”

Talking. “Talking to you,” I write, “makes me feel sane; and it’s not because you (sometimes) feel as insane as I do. It is the act, the exchange that stabilizes.”

Then, anticipating Naomi’s Christmas visit: “I am sick of having paper between us. I can’t wait to see you.” There was no end of needing to talk:
